AAMU Alum Boateng's Advice Appears in National Publications
Boateng Helps High Achievers Balance Emotional Health
She offers expert advice on everything from Black women’s hair to women deciding whether to have children. AAMU alumna Dr. Akua K. Boateng is a licensed psychotherapist and founder/CEO of Boateng Psychotherapy & Consulting, LLC in Philadelphia, a private practice and emotional wellness consulting firm. Boateng's practice focuses on providing emotional wellness coaching, consulting, and planning for high achieving, high profile people/organizations in business, sports and entertainment.
“As a therapist and coach, I have been fortunate enough to work with people at the height of their industries," she said. Whether it is a former professional athlete, c-suite executive, or actor, I have found that high achievers struggle to balance their emotional health with the demands of success.”
A native of Fresno, California, Boateng earned her biology pre-med degree at Oakwood University, her master’s degree in clinical psychology at AAMU in 2008 and her doctorate in Marriage and Family Therapy at Eastern University in Pennsylvania in 2019.
“After getting my master’s at Alabama A&M, I trained at multiple acute and outpatient facilities across the Tennessee Valley, including the North Alabama Regional State Hospital and the Homicide Survivors Recovery Program," she said. “I also gained experience as a psychological examiner, conducting intelligence and psychological testing, for private practices.”
Boateng says she became a therapist to support people in better understanding how they think, feel, and behave. After 13 years in practice, she is sought after to provide emotional wellness strategies as a speaker for companies like Pinterist and Black Enterprise. Her expert advice has also appeared on NBC News and in national publications across the country.
“I am honored to be featured in any publication. However, my work with Essence, HuffPost and Refinery29 is personally meaningful in my pursuit of helping women unlock their power via understanding their emotional health.”
Boateng also provides therapy for individuals and couples and shares advice and answers questions on her Instagram page.
“It is extremely rewarding to help couples see and love each other in deeper, more meaningful ways. I believe our world relies on these powerful, personal connections to have societal empathy, so I see immense value in what I do. My work privately has numerous ripple effects.”
Boateng says she hasn’t returned to AAMU but hopes to contribute to some aspect of the University’s institutional work in the future.
“My time on The Hill was wonderful. I gained valuable relationships and insights that I draw from until this day.”
