AAMU Alumnus Returns to Lead the Renaissance Orchestra at Homecoming

Dusk 2 Dawn Returns: Tyrone Bowie Brings the Music Home
When Tyrone “OG” Bowie experienced Dusk 2 Dawn as an Alabama A&M University freshman in 2009, he could not have known that the next time the Homecoming tradition came around, he would help provide its soundtrack.
Now the AAMU alumnus is returning to The Hill as founder and director of the Renaissance Orchestra, the featured entertainment for the return of Dusk 2 Dawn.
The all-night alumni pep rally and after-party returns Thursday, Oct. 15, at 10 p.m. at the AAMU Event Center, with the Renaissance Orchestra bringing its signature blend of orchestral musicianship, hip-hop, R&B, gospel and other genres to the celebration.

“The full-circle experience” is what Bowie said he is looking forward to most.
“I was a freshman at Alabama A&M in 2009 when Dusk 2 Dawn last took place,” Bowie said. “Now I’m returning years later to help bring this event back. I’m looking forward to celebrating with The Hill and creating a memorable experience for the entire AAMU community.”
Bowie now lives in Atlanta, where he leads the Renaissance Orchestra, an ensemble he founded in 2024 around the concept “Classical Meets Culture.”
The orchestra blends traditional orchestral musicianship with contemporary musical genres to create performances designed to bridge musical styles and audiences. Bowie said the group has performed on national tours and collaborated with major artists since its launch.
At Dusk 2 Dawn, Bowie will lead an ensemble with its own ties to Alabama A&M and the broader HBCU community. Three members of the orchestra attended AAMU, he said, while other members represent HBCUs across the country.
For Bowie, that makes the performance more than another stop for the ensemble.

“The Renaissance Orchestra is built around rebirth, representation and bringing musicians to the forefront of culture,” he said. “Our team represents the excellence and creativity that HBCUs produce, and we’re proud to bring that spirit to Alabama A&M.”
Bowie said attendees can expect the orchestra to deliver an energetic performance built around music familiar to multiple generations.
“We combine live orchestral performance with the music and culture people connect with, creating an experience that brings everyone into the moment,” he said.
Bowie also performs using an MPC — a music production instrument he calls “Lucille” — which has been featured in some of the orchestra’s recent performances and videos.
His history at Alabama A&M extends beyond music. A secondary education major and student-athlete, Bowie competed in track and field and earned 2011 All-SWAC recognition in shot put and discus.

His experiences on The Hill continue to shape his appreciation for Homecoming and the connections it creates among alumni.
“Homecoming is one of those times when you have different generations of Bulldogs in the same place,” Bowie said. “Everybody may have graduated in different years and have different experiences, but for that week, we’re connected by A&M.”
“Dusk 2 Dawn was another piece of that culture,” he added.
Its return, Bowie said, gives longtime alumni an opportunity to revisit that tradition while introducing it to a new generation of Bulldogs.
“It connects alumni who remember the original event with students who will experience it for the first time,” he said. “I’m honored that The Renaissance Orchestra gets to contribute to this new chapter.”
For Bowie, returning in a leadership role with an ensemble that includes fellow AAMU alumni makes the occasion especially meaningful.
“It’s an opportunity to give back to a place that played a role in my journey and celebrate the culture that continues to shape me,” Bowie said.
And as the Renaissance Orchestra prepares to bring “Classical Meets Culture” to The Hill, Bowie has a simple goal for the group’s Homecoming performance.
“Dusk 2 Dawn is a special homecoming for me, and I’m excited for us to create something the entire Hill can enjoy,” he said. “Our mission is to shift the culture.”
