Burks Named HBCU Color Guard/Flag Line Director of the Year

Nakesha Burks has two jobs on The Hill. The executive assistant to the Vice President for Business and Finance has also been the auxiliary coach for the Alabama A&M University Marching Maroon and White Fabulous Flags for eight years.

“My day typically consists of coming to work, changing in my office at 5 o’clock,” says Burks. “I’m out there on the band field with the girls until we have our show together and then it’s time to go home. This is every day.”

Her hard work has now earned national recognition. Burks was named Color Guard/Flag Line Director of the Year at the National HBCU Auxiliary and Dance Directors’ Association (ADD) 2024 National Conference last week in Atlanta.

“I was shocked,” she says. “It wasn’t just a recognition for me, it was a recognition for my squad.”

The Fabulous Flags - the MMW's color guard auxiliary team - reports to campus early along with the band during summer band camp. Burk says their days start at 4 o’clock in the morning and last all day.

“My window overlooks Morrison,” she says. “So, during band camp, I check on them throughout the day. That’s an ongoing joke with the girls. They always make sure they’re standing up straight because they know I’m looking out that window.”

Burks oversees all aspects of the team, which normally consists of 18 – 20 young ladies.

“I choreograph the halftime shows, parades, events, all performances,” she says. “I travel with the team and am responsible for hair, makeup, and wardrobe. Our flag work, called drill work, has to coordinate with the band, and my girls are featured at most games.”

Burks knows first-hand just how hectic the schedule can be for college students. The 2000 AAMU alumna was the co-captain of the Fabulous Flags from 1997-1998. She says the most important part of her job has nothing to do with the team’s performance, it’s her role as a mentor.

“These young ladies come from various backgrounds and you’re not just teaching them flag work, you’re actually their second mom away from home,” says Burks. “You’re the person that they look to for guidance when they have questions about academics, finances, etc. I’m teaching them time management, how to prioritize their day, and how to keep their academics up.”

Along with crediting her team, Burks also thanks Director of Bands Carlton Wright for her achievement.

“Carlton Wright is very supportive of my program and has always supported me as a coach.”

Burks is now preparing for Fabulous Flags Auditions this weekend and has placed her award in her office, next to photos of all her teams since 2015.

“I was humbled and excited to bring the award back to The Hill. It’s rewarding to be able to mentor and give back to my alma mater and my girls.”
