Funding Provides Paid Summer Internships for Students
AAMU Food and Animal Sciences Secures $750,000 DOE Grant
Faculty from the AAMU Department of Food and Animal Sciences secured a $750,000 grant from the Department of Education, spanning from 2022 to 2025. This funding allows for the implementation of a program offering compensated internships to students enrolled in Animal Bio-Health Sciences (ABHS).
“This summer, a select group of students had the opportunity to participate in internships
with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)," says Dr. Jorge Vizcarra (PI), Professor
and ABHS Program Coordinator. "Simultaneously, another cohort of students engaged
in compensated internships at various locations, including local animal clinics.”
Recent ABHS internship opportunities have included posts at the Department of Education
(DOE), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Land O'Lakes, Bentley Animal Hospital,
Huntsville Animal Clinic, Midtown Animal Clinic, Huntsville Veterinary Specialists,
and Emergency
Animal Care Clinic.
“These internships provide a valuable experiential learning opportunity to our ABHS
students," said Vizcarra. "Our primary objective is to increase the use of hands-on
approaches, by providing project-based learning, curriculum development, and data
collection. This grant has not only opened doors for our students, but also reinforces
our dedication to innovative and impactful educational practices.”
