Actor Larenz Tate to Headline AAMU Male Initiative Week

Actor Larenz Tate will be on campus on Tuesday, February 20, to speak to students about his career and offer tips for young men during AAMU’s Male Initiative Week: Kings on The Hill.

The Chicago native landed on television screens in 1985 in the sci-fi series “The Twilight Zone” and has since captured audiences worldwide. Tate has starred in several beloved films including Allen and Albert Hughes' classic films “Dead Presidents,” and “Menace II Society,” iconic films that illustrated the reality of Black men growing up in South Central Los Angeles. In Menace, Tate’s character, O-Dog is one of the most celebrated and intimate heroines in Black cinema.

Tate also starred in the cult-classic film “Love Jones” with Nia Long; “Why Do Fools Fall in Love,” “Ray,” and three-time Academy Award winning-film “Crash.” In 2017, Tate joined Malcolm Lee’s blockbuster comedy “Girls Trip.”

Currently, Tate stars as Congressman Rashad Tate, a politician who would do anything for power and success, in Starz’s number one drama series “Power Book II: Ghost.” 

Tate, along with his brothers LaRon and Lahmard Tate, who are also actors, created TateMen Entertainment, which develops projects across multiple entertainment mediums. Over the years, Tate has remained steadfast in his desire to be a vessel for aspiring filmmakers. writers and directors and championing Black storytelling.

Monday, February 19: “Just Mercy” Discussion Panel – 12:30 p.m. in Buchanan Hall followed by screening of “Just Mercy” the movie

Tuesday, February 20: Speaking Event with Larenz Tate – 12:30 p.m. in Knight Ballroom

Tuesday, February 20: Training Grounds of a King – 6:00 p.m. in Knight Ballrooom

Wednesday, February 21: Every Sunny Wednesday “Man Crush Wednesday” – 12:00 p.m. in Knight Courtyard

Friday, February 23: Kings vs. Kings Flag Football – 5:00 p.m. at Louis Crews Stadium
