AAMU Student Finds Purpose Through Healing

Driven to Make a Difference, Jones Prepares for Career in Mental Health
For Adysun Jones, the path to becoming a physician was shaped long before she stepped
into a laboratory or shadowed a doctor. Personal adversity became the catalyst for
a calling that has grown into a mission to improve the lives of young people facing
challenges that often go unseen.
At Alabama A&M University, Jones has transformed that calling into action. Through
the University’s Honors Program, leadership opportunities, and meaningful service
experiences, she has developed the confidence, communication skills, and sense of
responsibility that define the physician she hopes to become.
“My passion for medicine began after battling my own mental health challenges and
realizing how important compassionate healthcare can be,” Jones said. “That experience
gave me a new perspective on the impact that providers can have on a person’s life,
not just by treating illness, but by offering hope, support, and understanding.”
This summer, Jones joined Alabama A&M University’s delegation to the Meharry BS/MD
Summer Enrichment Program, where the University represented the program’s largest
cohort of students. The experience broadened her understanding of healthcare inequities,
connected her with physician mentors, and strengthened her resolve to pursue a career
serving communities with limited access to mental healthcare.
“Being part of the Meharry BS/MD Program has been one of the most rewarding experiences
of my undergraduate journey,” she said. “The program has provided invaluable mentorship,
exposure to the medical field, and opportunities to learn from physicians who are
deeply committed to serving their communities.”
Jones plans to become a child and adolescent psychiatrist, focusing on creating environments
where young patients feel respected, supported, and empowered to overcome life’s obstacles.
