A&M Students Pitch AI Solution to Help Students Choose Majors
AAMU Students Win $10,000 in HBCU Business Pitch Competition
AAMU students Opeyeoluwa Olanipekun and Olasubomi Olawepo competed against 42 other teams and took home first place and a $10,000 check in The Alabama Collective HBCU Business Pitch Competition at the Magic City Classic.
“Our pitch was an AI solution that helps student select the ideal major for them and help them navigate through college effortlessly,” says Olanipekun.
Olanipekun, a junior electrical engineering major from Ibadan, Nigeria, and Olawepo, a senior computer science major from Lagos, Nigeria, say they came up with the idea after their own struggles selecting a major.
“I’m a senior computer science major, but I switched my major from biology. I didn't know much about computer science until I was curious about app development,” says Olawepo. “Ope also expressed the same concern, and we know many other students, especially freshmen, asking what their majors should be.”
The presentation - titled “H-Coach” - was named for the solution's focus on providing a way for HBCU students to receive coaching and guidance towards student success.
“We were both excited to win. We worked hard and I was glad our hard work paid off,” says Olawepo.
“We plan to use some of the funds to explore bringing this idea to life to help students pick the right major for them,” added Olanipekun.
Olawepo has accepted a job as a product manager with Mastercard after graduation. Olanipekun plans to become an embedded firmware engineer.
