Dr. Janet M'mbaha-Zarnesky, a distinguished Associate Professor of Health Science & Human Performance, has been honored with the 2024 Redstone Federal Credit Union Community Champions Award. This prestigious recognition highlights her unwavering commitment to improving the health and well-being of underserved communities through education and outreach.
M'mbaha-Zarnesky is the visionary founder and CEO of the Action Kids Tennis Camp, a program that has been making a profound impact for the past eight years. The camp provides free physical activity and health education to children from underserved areas, offering them not only the opportunity to engage in sports, but also access to vital health information. Every summer, the initiative provides transportation for students from the Dr. Richard Showers, Sr. Recreation Center to Alabama A&M University, where they are welcomed by volunteers, including University professors and athletes, who dedicate their time to mentoring and teaching the young participants.
Dr. Sadguna Anasuri, Associate Professor of Human Development and Family Studies and co-founder of the camp, emphasizes the importance of holistic health education, addressing nutrition, emotional, and mental well-being as integral components of the program. The camp's mission aligns with the values of Alabama A&M's College of Education, Humanities, and Behavioral Sciences, led by Dean Dr. Peter Eley, who attended the award ceremony alongside Mr. Kent Ballard, Supervisor at the Richard Showers Recreation Center.
