Future pediatrician builds on childhood dreams through AAMU, Meharry

Early Experiences Shape Azavier Pines' Purpose in Medicine
For as long as he can remember, Azavier Pines has felt drawn to medicine. Childhood games spent caring for stuffed animals and dressing
up as a doctor eventually evolved into a deeper understanding of the profession and
a desire to serve others through healthcare. At Alabama A&M, that lifelong interest
continues to grow into a clear vision for the future.
"I've always had a natural desire to help others and a deep curiosity about understanding
the world around us,” Pines said. “Medicine brings those passions together, allowing
me to make a meaningful difference in people's lives while continuing to learn, grow
and serve my community."
In high school, Pines enrolled in a medical training program that combined rigorous
academic preparation with hands-on clinical experience. Rotations through multiple
hospital departments, including labor and delivery, emergency services, pharmacy and
surgical care, confirmed that medicine was where he belonged. He also completed more
than 200 volunteer hours and earned certification as a patient care technician.
This summer, Pines joined Alabama A&M’s delegation to the Meharry BS/MD Summer Enrichment
Program. The experience reinforced both the demands and the rewards of a medical career
while connecting him with mentors, physicians and future classmates who helped strengthen
his confidence as he prepares for medical school.
Looking ahead, Pines hopes to become a pediatric physician who delivers personalized,
compassionate care while helping families build healthier futures.
"I aspire to be a physician who not only treats illness but also cares for the whole
patient,” he said. “I want every person I serve to feel heard, understood and valued,
while helping families build healthier lives and breaking generational cycles of preventable
disease in underserved communities."
For Pines, the path to medicine has been shaped by years of curiosity, preparation
and purpose. Through opportunities at Alabama A&M and the Meharry BS/MD Summer Enrichment
Program, he is continuing to build the knowledge, discipline and perspective needed
to serve others. As he works toward a career in pediatrics, his focus remains on creating
healthier futures for children and families while helping address healthcare disparities
in communities that need it most.
