AAMU Alumna Named Cullman Area Chamber Ambassador

Alabama A&M University alumna Theia L. Byars has been selected as an Ambassador for the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce, a prestigious role reserved for civic-minded professionals who exemplify leadership, service, and community engagement.

A proud native of Birmingham, Alabama, Byars serves as Director of Social Services at Venza Care – Sanctuary at the Woodland Hospital in Birmingham. Her selection as a Chamber Ambassador highlights her growing influence in the region and her steadfast dedication to improving the lives of others – a mission that traces its roots directly to her time on The Hill.

“My time on The Hill was truly transformative,” said Byars, who earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology in 2013 and her Master of Social Work degree in 2017 from Alabama A&M. “Attending Alabama A&M University was more than just an academic experience – it was a journey of growth, purpose, and community. ‘Service is Sovereignty’ wasn’t just a motto, but a way of life that fueled my passion for social work and advocacy. I carry the spirit of The Hill with me in everything I do.”

Byars’ commitment to service began long before her current leadership role. Inspired by a strong family legacy at Alabama A&M – including her mother, Tommie Byars (Class of 1972), and several other relatives who are alumni – she grew up grounded in the values of hard work, compassion, and faith. She credits her mother with instilling in her the importance of giving back and honoring one’s roots.

Now, as a Cullman Chamber Ambassador, she will help welcome new businesses, foster relationships across the region, and support the Chamber’s events and outreach efforts. The role calls for individuals who are not only professional and reliable, but also deeply invested in community betterment – a natural fit for Byars.

“I was drawn to this opportunity because it aligns so closely with my personal and professional values,” she said. “It allows me to continue building relationships, growing my knowledge of the business community, and giving back in meaningful ways. Being a voice for the community and helping others feel connected – that’s at the heart of everything I do.”

With more than a decade of experience in social services, Byars has become a vocal advocate for mental health equity, crisis intervention, and systemic change. Her work supports underserved communities through direct care, case management, and public education.

“One of the most valuable lessons I learned at Alabama A&M is that true leadership is rooted in service to others,” she said. “That principle has guided every step of my work in social services. The academic training was strong, but it was the values instilled on The Hill that truly shaped the way I serve.”

In her current role, she continues to promote mental wellness and access to care, while mentoring others in the field. Whether speaking at community events or volunteering in her free time, Byars exemplifies the spirit of service – something she attributes to her AAMU education and the lasting impact of her time on campus.

“My goal is to leave the world better than I found it,” she said. “Alabama A&M helped prepare me for that mission. And now, whether I’m working in healthcare or representing the Chamber, I’m always walking in that purpose.”
