AAMU student pursues career in pediatric cardiology

Cameron Finds Calling While Caring for Youngest Brother
For Niyah Cameron, medicine became personal at an early age. Watching her youngest
brother overcome serious health challenges gave her a front-row seat to the difference
compassionate physicians can make in the lives of patients and their families.
“I saw firsthand how doctors provide hope during some of the most difficult moments,”
said Cameron. “That inspired me to pursue a career where I could do the same for others.”
Since arriving at Alabama A&M, Cameron has continued to build toward that goal through
research, leadership opportunities and clinical experiences that have expanded both
her scientific knowledge and her understanding of patient care.
This summer, she completed the Meharry Medical College BS/MD Summer Program, where
students from 11 historically Black colleges and universities participated in physician
mentorship, professional development and experiences designed to prepare them for
medical school and careers in healthcare.
“Being part of the Meharry BS/MD Program has been an incredible opportunity that has
challenged me to grow both personally and professionally,” Cameron said. “It has introduced
me to mentors, physicians, and fellow students who are all committed to serving communities
that have historically faced barriers to quality healthcare.”
Cameron credits Alabama A&M’s faculty mentors and research opportunities with preparing
her to make the most of experiences like Meharry. As an Honors Biology student and
undergraduate researcher studying HIV-1 protein dynamics through computational biology,
she has developed a strong foundation while gaining confidence as both a scientist
and future physician.
“As an Honors Biology student, researcher, and campus leader, I have been surrounded
by professors and mentors who have challenged me to reach my full potential while
reminding me that I belong in every space I enter,” she said.
Cameron hopes to become a pediatric cardiologist, combining clinical excellence with
a commitment to serving children and families in underserved communities. She also
wants to mentor future healthcare professionals, creating opportunities for students
who aspire to follow a similar path.
“I want my legacy to be defined by compassion, service, and a commitment to creating
opportunities for others,” Cameron said. “I hope people remember me not only for the
lives I helped heal but also for the hope I inspired in the next generation.”
