150th Anniversary Torchbearers Honored During AAMU Homecoming Week

Alabama A&M University honored its 150th Anniversary Torchbearers Wednesday evening with a moving tribute and reception at the AAMU Event Center during Homecoming Week. The event recognized alumni, supporters, and friends across the nation whose leadership and generosity have helped the AAMU 150th Campaign Torchbearers Initiative surpass its goal.

Exceeded Goals in Support of a Stronger AAMU

Torchbearers have already raised more than $2.8 million in the special campaign initiative which originally sought to raise $1 million through small gatherings of AAMU supporters during the sesquicentennial celebration. A new Torchbearer goal of $3 million has been set as the initiative will continue through the end of the 2025 campaign year. The Torchbearer events – small gatherings designed to raise at least $25,000 each – have proven instrumental in rallying alumni and friends throughout the Anniversary year celebration. The inaugural reception, hosted in Huntsville by Dr. Dorothy W. Huston, raised more than $50,000, setting the pace for over 50 events planned throughout the campaign.

A Call for Broad Bulldog Support

Themed “Rich Heritage, Bold Future,” the overall 150th Anniversary Campaign is rallying the AAMU community to raise $15 million in individual contributions to increase scholarships, strengthen campus facilities, and expand STEM infrastructure.

President Daniel K. Wims, Campaign Committee Chairman Robert Holmes, alumnus and NFL legend John Stallworth, and Vice President for Marketing, Communications, and Advancement Jamal Ali delivered heartfelt remarks of gratitude, inspiration, and purpose.

Torchbearers were individually recognized as they were announced on stage and escorted by members of the AAMU FireDawgs. Each carried the AAMU 150th Anniversary ceremonial torch.

John Stallworth, President Daniel K. Wims, Chala Ford, Michael Ford and 150th Chair Robert Holmes

In his address, Stallworth, who helped launch the 150th Anniversary Campaign with a $1.2 million endowment through the John Stallworth Foundation, reminded attendees of the power of giving back. The foundation’s gift provides merit-based scholarships for academically gifted students at his alma mater. “Your support of this University is powerful,” said Stallworth. “I know that our prayers, our partners, and those who believe in the mission and future of Alabama A&M will keep us moving forward. Your dedication challenges all of us who are here – it’s inspiring as we work together toward a stronger Alabama A&M.”

Committee Chairman Robert Holmes expressed deep appreciation for the supporters who have already stepped forward. “Alabama A&M has been there for us,” said Holmes. “Now, it’s time for us to be there for this University. This work is an honor for me as one of the thousands who have come to this place for an education and found a home, friendships of a lifetime, and family. We must do the work now of ensuring the growth and viability of AAMU for another 150 years. This is our time. This is our time. This is our time!”

Vice President Jamal Ali celebrated the success of this year’s 150th Anniversary campaign. “Thank you for your help to galvanize our peers and everybody within our University,” he said. “It has given us an opportunity to come together, pursue a clear purpose, and to overcome challenges as one community.”

President Wims praised the Torchbearers for their extraordinary commitment. “You truly delivered,” said Wims. “Our goal was $25,000 at each gathering, and you exceeded that – some raising $100,000 or more. We are humbled and deeply grateful. Because of your support, our University continues to grow: the new student amenities building is underway, the new science building will prepare some of the brightest minds, and Hillcrest is on the horizon. You are honoring our rich heritage while shaping a bold future. Thank you for your service – thank you all.”
