The First Day of Spring – a Season of Renewal and Possibilities

Spring is more than just a change in weather – it’s a time of renewal, growth, and fresh beginnings. The vernal equinox, when day and night are nearly equal, symbolizes balance and transformation. As nature awakens, so do opportunities for personal and professional growth.

For centuries, cultures around the world have celebrated this celestial event, recognizing it as a turning point for new possibilities. Even today, the vernal equinox influences major traditions, including the timing of Easter.

We spoke with Willie Diggs, Director of Field Education in the Department of Social Work for the past nine years, about what the First Day of Spring means and how we can embrace the season with purpose.

“The First Day of Spring represents a change from one season where days and nights were cold, to the season where things that were dormant now begin to blossom,” says Diggs. “I see spring as a time of rebirth, a time for planting new seeds, and a time of fresh starts. In our roles as mentors, teachers, and agents of change, Spring stands for the ideals of optimism, progress, and change.”

The change in season represents a renewal for many.

“In 2025, the First Day of Spring serves as a reminder that no matter what challenges we have faced, or will face in the future, we are stepping into a season of unlimited possibilities,” says Diggs. “It is an invitation to embrace fresh opportunities, refocus our goals, and step into the next chapter of our personal and professional journeys with confidence and faith.”

Diggs believes that the arrival of spring is the perfect opportunity to reset, refocus, and embrace new possibilities.

“At Alabama A&M University, Spring is more than a season – it’s a mindset and mood,” explains Diggs. “It’s a time for students to reenergize their academic goals, prepare for graduation, seek internships, and set their sights on future success. As a mentor, I encourage students to use this season to reflect, reset, and reignite their passion for learning and service.”

Here are ten ways to make the most of the season.

10 Ways to Start the Spring Season Right

2. Get Organized – Clean your space, declutter your mind.

“Spring reminds us that growth is always possible,” says Diggs. “Just as flowers bloom after the winter, we too can rise stronger and better. Let this season at Alabama A&M be one of transformation, where we all embrace our potential and step boldly into our future. Here’s to a season of fresh beginnings and limitless opportunities!”
