Breaking Barriers: A&M Alumna Becomes First African American Executive Assistant to CEO of Georgia Power
Sims Makes History First African American Executive Assistant to CEO at Georgia Power
Alabama A&M University Alumna Tiffany Sims has made history as the first African American to hold the position of executive
assistant to the CEO of Georgia Power, the largest subsidiary of Southern Company.
In her role, Sims provides invaluable support to the Chairman, President, and CEO,
facilitating the company's strategic initiatives and championing operational efficiency.
“I was absolutely thrilled to step into my new role,” shares Sims. “I am a true believer
in ‘it's not by chance.’ What an amazing journey it has been for me. My mentors and
managers saw something in me and knew I would make a positive impact.”
Sims’ ascent to the position underscores her exceptional talent and dedication. Beginning as an intern with Southern Company as a student at AAMU, she quickly distinguished herself, transitioning into a full-time role with Georgia Power after earning her degree in secondary education. Recognized for her proficiency and leadership, she was invited to join the Office of the CEO in March 2023, culminating in her appointment as lead executive assistant this year.
“Executive assistants wear many hats: strategic business partner, project manager, confidant, and leader,” notes Sims. “This role is not limited to one thing; there are opportunities to touch every part of the business while supporting your executive and helping them achieve their goals.”
Sims' achievement is further amplified by her support of another trailblazing leader, Kim Greene, the first female CEO of Georgia Power.
“It has been extraordinary for me to have these opportunities,” reflects Sims. “Being the first African American in this role, reporting to Kim Greene, is incredibly powerful. It is a testament to the strides we are making towards diversity and inclusion.”
With strong ties to Alabama A&M University, Sims remains deeply connected to her alma mater, where familial bonds and cherished memories abound.
“My roots run deep," she said. "My entire immediate family are alumni of this amazing institution. My husband (Steven D. Sims), father (Walter Franklin Conley, Sr.), mother (Elizabeth Joseph Conley), and brothers (Walter Jr. and Michael Conley) graduated from AAMU. There is no better feeling like coming back to a place where you feel valued and respected, and everyone knows your name.”
As she continues to excel in her career, Sims remains committed to inspiring the next generation of leaders and fostering meaningful connections within her community and beyond.
“This position allows me to cultivate relationships with employees at all levels in the company,” she says. “I am happy I chose a career where I can be of service to others and help elevate the brand of my executive and company. My goal moving forward is to inspire and give back to the next generation of thinkers and leaders.”
