Keshia Knight Pulliam Inspires at Annual Tea on The Hill

Emmy-nominated actress, producer, and entrepreneur Keshia Knight Pulliam delivered an empowering message of self-worth, resilience, and HBCU pride as the keynote speaker for Alabama A&M University’s Annual Tea on The Hill Thursday in Elmore Gym. The signature event is a highlight of Women’s Week 2025, a week-long celebration dedicated to honoring the strength, leadership, and achievements of women.

Faith Gatson, the 74th Miss Alabama A&M University and a senior communications media major, led the engaging keynote conversation, guiding Pulliam through reflections on her career, personal journey, and commitment to uplifting others.

A Lifetime in Acting

“I’ve been in the business since I was six months old,” Pulliam shared, recalling her first appearance in a Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder ad. “Acting has always been something I’ve loved, and I’m incredibly grateful for my family’s support. Many child actors struggle as they transition into adulthood, but I had strong examples of what not to do. I learned valuable lessons watching those who came before me.”

Reflecting on her upbringing, she acknowledged the challenges of growing up in the spotlight while crediting her parents for their unwavering guidance. “I’m from New Jersey and when I look back, they were so young. I want to tell you all that, until you’re a parent, you don’t realize that your parents are figuring it out as they go. As a mother, I realize my parents did a good job.”

The Transformative Power of HBCUs

A proud graduate of Spelman College, Pulliam’s connection to HBCUs began at an early age. “I decided I wanted to attend Spelman when I was seven years old,” she said. “I saw all these beautiful, intelligent Black women on campus while filming “The Cosby Show.” It was also the fictional Hillman for “A Different World,” and I knew that’s where I belonged.”

Despite already having a successful acting career, she embraced the college experience wholeheartedly. “People questioned why I would take a break from acting to go to school. One of the many beautiful things about HBCUs is they give you the space and environment that is encouraging, that is dedicated to your success and dedicated to pouring into you and gives you that safe space to grow.”

The Meaning of Sisterhood

“It shouldn’t be because you’re a member of a sorority that you are sisterly, that should be given,” Pulliam emphasized. “You should be uplifting and supporting other women regardless of affiliation. We are only as strong as our weakest link.”

A member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Pulliam described her decision to join as deeply personal. “I saw powerful, business-minded women making a difference, and I wanted to be part of that legacy. But I always tell people, ‘You make Delta. Delta doesn’t make you.’ The same goes for any organization – you are there because you are already worthy and deserving.”

Balancing Career, Motherhood, and Life

“There is no such thing as perfect balance,” Pulliam admitted. “Some days, certain aspects of your life will require more attention than others. The key is to pivot, manage your time wisely, and give yourself grace.”

She emphasized the importance of self-care and mental well-being. “Rest and restoration are essential. Meditation, proper nutrition, and positive thinking play a major role in my daily routine. You can’t pour from an empty cup.”

Authenticity and Self-Worth

As a public figure, Pulliam understands the pressure of constant scrutiny. “We often try to be who others expect us to be rather than embracing our authentic selves,” she said. Stop it! Don’t do it! I am authentically who I am every day of the week and twice on Tuesday. My village and my people, we will find each other. The truth is, you are enough just as you are. The right people will find you when you are unapologetically yourself.”

She also encouraged students to follow their passions rather than conforming to societal or parental expectations. “If you live your life for someone else, you will never be truly happy. Stay in your lane, embrace what brings you joy, and never settle for being a copy when you were born a priceless original.”

A Career of Impact and Innovation

Beyond her iconic role as Rudy Huxtable on “The Cosby Show,” Pulliam has built an impressive career in television and film, starring in “Beauty Shop,” “Tyler Perry's House of Payne,” and various Lifetime and Hallmark productions.

She is also a trailblazing entrepreneur, co-founding The Fearless Fund, a venture capital initiative supporting women of color in business. Additionally, she launched Kamp Kizzy, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering young girls, and developed Keshia’s Kitchen Collection, a premium spice line.

When asked about her favorite role, she expressed excitement about her upcoming film “Wife Stalker,” and her role as host and executive producer of “Married at First Sight Afterparty.” Pulliam’s final words echoed in the hearts of all in attendance: “You are enough. You were born worthy. Own your power and walk in your purpose.”
