Etiquette Dining Workshop Scheduled for AAMU Students

Alabama A&M University will host an Etiquette Dining Workshop on March 10 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the Knight Reception Hall. The workshop will be led by Dr. Ethel Jones, chair of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, and offers students an opportunity to sharpen professional skills ahead of Tea on the Hill and future career engagements.

The interactive session is designed to teach participants how to confidently navigate a formal meal while making a strong impression in professional settings. Through a five-course dining experience, students will learn the fundamentals of business dining, from proper introductions to mastering place settings and meal etiquette.

The workshop will cover professional introductions and appropriate table conversation, including how to engage in meaningful dialogue while maintaining decorum. Participants will also receive guidance on understanding place settings, including which utensils and glasses to use, as well as proper napkin etiquette.

Additional instruction will focus on ordering and dining basics, including how to approach bread service, soup, salad and dessert courses. Facilitators will also discuss business meal do’s and don’ts, such as phone etiquette, posture and pacing throughout the meal.

Students will gain practical networking strategies tailored to mealtime settings, including how to initiate small talk, actively listen and exit conversations gracefully. The session is ideal for those preparing for interviews, employer-hosted dinners, conferences, internships and other professional development opportunities. Male and female students are welcome to participate.

Business attire is required for the workshop. Students are encouraged to register in advance.
