Alabama A&M Celebrates 25 Years of Successful Aging Initiative Conference

Alabama A&M University will celebrate 25 years of empowering older adults through education, wellness and community engagement when the Successful Aging Initiative (SAI) Conference returns Thursday, Oct. 22, to Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, 315 Winchester Road in Huntsville.

Hosted by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System at Alabama A&M University through the Virginia Caples Lifelong Learning Institute (VCLLI), the free annual conference will take place from 7:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. More than 600 participants from Madison County and surrounding communities are expected to attend.

This year's theme, “Silver Moments, Golden Goals,” commemorates the conference's 25th anniversary while celebrating the experiences, accomplishments, and contributions of older adults. The event will also encourage participants to embrace new opportunities for personal growth, wellness and lifelong learning.

Since 2001, Alabama Extension at AAMU has provided educational programming addressing aging, dementia, health, financial security and legal issues. Over the past 25 years, these efforts have connected thousands of older adults, caregivers and families with resources to support independence and improve quality of life.

“Our primary focus is celebrating the wisdom, experiences, and accomplishments that come with age while encouraging older adults to continue pursuing meaningful goals and new opportunities,” said Dr. Danielle Rudolph, event coordinator and site director of VCLLI. “This year's theme reflects the belief that every stage of life offers possibilities for growth, purpose, and connection.”

The conference will feature presentations by medical, financial and community experts addressing issues that affect older adults and their families. Scheduled speakers include Dr. Kaushik Jain, a cardiologist and assistant professor of medicine affiliated with Huntsville Hospital and the University of Alabama at Birmingham; amyloidosis advocate Mike Lane; Huntsville Hospital cardiology pharmacist Emily Powell; and Nicholas “Nick” Vonderau, communications and public relations manager for the Alabama Securities Commission.

Participants will have access to free health screenings, including blood pressure, blood glucose and heart valve screenings, along with heart disease genetic testing. Participating organizations include Drake State Community & Technical College, HeartSense, UAH Neighborhood Nursing and Huntsville Hospital Heart Center.

A free legal clinic will provide guidance on civil legal matters, including estate planning, housing, heirs’ property, elder abuse and neglect and life care planning.

Attendees gather for a previous Successful Aging Initiative Conference, which provides educational resources and opportunities for older adults, caregivers and families.

The conference will also introduce participants to emerging technology through an interactive artificial intelligence fraud simulation presented by the Top of Alabama Regional Council of Governments’ (TARCOG) Alabama Cares Program. The activity will help older adults recognize potential scams and learn strategies to protect their personal and financial information.

Additional community services will include medication disposal, electronic waste collection and secure paper shredding from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Attendees may bring unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medications, including medications for pets, as well as electronic devices and sensitive documents for disposal.

Music will be part of the anniversary celebration, with performances by AAMU alumna and “The Voice” finalist Jazz McKenzie, Huntsville saxophonist Alex D. Banks II and Madison County musical artist Tommie Lockhart. The performers will take attendees on a musical journey through familiar songs spanning several decades.

Conference organizers also encourage participants to bring a canned food item to support the Food Bank of North Alabama and families experiencing food insecurity.

The Successful Aging Initiative Conference is open to adults 50 and older, caregivers, families and community service providers. Admission and lunch are free, and advance registration is encouraged.
