Major Encourages AAMU Freshman Class to Stay Eager

Alabama A&M University welcomed the Class of 2027 at the annual Freshman Convocation and Torch Lighting ceremony Saturday. The largest incoming class in the University’s history consists of over 2,000 students. Keynote speaker Eboni Major ’15 challenged students to stay eager despite the challenges they face.

“In a bottle, I’ve not only found a sense of accomplishment, but a testament to the power of embracing my identity, following my passion, facing challenges head-on, and collaborating
with a diverse community.”

Major is credited as the first Black woman whiskey blender. A Birmingham native, she has earned over a dozen San Francisco Spirits Awards including several gold medals and won Diageo’s 2020 GLOBAL Craftsperson of the Year. Her portfolio and experience includes brand homes of George Dickel, IW Harper, Blade & Bow, and several other US whiskies. In a candidate and relevant speech, Major shared examples of the ups and downs she experienced as a student and a Black woman entering a male-dominated field.

“Success is not a destination, it’s a journey that’s paved with you passion and driven by your dedication and discipline,” said Major. “Seek what sets your heart on fire and makes time go by so quick that you don’t even know.”

Major says her Alabama A&M journey instilled resilience often called upon in her career journey. She highlighted several AAMU mentors who played a part in preparing her for groundbreaking success in her industry.

“Stuff happens,” she said. “Adversity is not an enemy to shy away from. It is an invaluable teacher that shapes our character and resilience. Every challenge you face over the next four years is going to be an opportunity for growth and learning”.
