AAMU’s El-Dweik Attends Governor’s Signing for Alabama Extension Week

Alabama A&M University Vice President for Research and Economic Development and Interim 1890 Administrator Dr. Majed El-Dweik joined Alabama Governor Kay Ivey for the signing of a proclamation declaring October 5–11, 2025, as Alabama Extension Week. The ceremony, held in Montgomery, also included Auburn’s Extension Director Dr. Mike Phillips, along with other leaders committed to advancing the state’s outreach and engagement.

Alabama Extension Week celebrates the vital role of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System in connecting the people of Alabama with science-based information and resources that improve lives and communities. During the week, residents across the state are encouraged to engage with Extension by contacting a local agent, attending an event, or visiting a county Extension office.

Alabama Extension represents a strong partnership between Alabama A&M University and Auburn University, serving as a bridge between university research and everyday life. Through an extensive network of regional centers and county offices, Extension professionals deliver practical solutions to all 67 Alabama counties. Their work spans topics ranging from family well-being and financial literacy to natural resources, food safety, and agricultural innovation.

El-Dweik and Phillips have worked collaboratively to ensure that both universities continue to highlight their expertise and community impact through the Discover Alabama Extension promotional campaign. Originally created to serve rural communities with practical agricultural advice, Alabama Extension has evolved to meet the changing needs of a diverse and growing state. Today, its mission extends from farms to front yards, addressing challenges in both rural and urban areas.

Founded through the Smith-Lever Act of 1914, the Cooperative Extension System has a rich history of empowering people through education and innovation. From early on-farm demonstrations to today’s data-driven solutions, Extension remains true to its land-grant mission – using research and outreach to improve the quality of life for all Alabamians.
