Class of ’66 Alumnus Recognized for Trailblazing Career in Government

Alabama A&M University is proud to announce distinguished alumnus Freeman Holifield, Sr. ’66 has been selected for induction into the National Black College Alumni (NBCA) Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta, Georgia.

Holifield will be recognized in the Government category for his groundbreaking career and service. A U.S. Army veteran, he began his career as one of the first African American officers in the Huntsville Police Department before joining the U.S. Army Ordnance Missile & Munitions Center and School, where he achieved multiple historic “firsts” over a 33-year federal career. His leadership expanded education services both in the United States and abroad, earning him widespread recognition and respect.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Holifield has been a lifelong advocate for Alabama A&M University and his community, supporting higher education, civic leadership, and opportunities for the next generation.

The 40th Annual NBCA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will feature 14 honorees across fields including education, industry, law, medicine, science, athletics, art, business, entertainment, and lifetime achievement. Hosting the ceremony will be award-winning journalist Monica Pearson and Kevin Frazier, co-host of “Entertainment Tonight.”

The induction is part of the broader NBCA Hall of Fame Weekend, which also includes the Competition of Black College Queens, Thomas W. Dortch, Jr. HBCU Golf Classic, Legacy of Leaders Alumni Honors, Call to Womanhood and Call to Manhood Symposiums, and other programs designed to celebrate excellence and empower the HBCU community.

With this honor, Holifield will join more than 300 distinguished leaders, innovators, and trailblazers who exemplify the spirit of excellence and service rooted in HBCU tradition.
