Initiative Promotes Fitness, Friendly Competition and Healthier Communities

AAMU VCLLI Joins Alabama Extension for Statewide Walking Like a Champion Challenge
Alabama A&M University’s Virginia Caples Lifelong Learning Institute (VCLLI) is partnering with Alabama Extension's Walking Like a CHAMPION program to host a statewide walking challenge from March 1 through April 30, encouraging participants to build healthy habits through movement and friendly competition.
The initiative invites youth and adults across Alabama to stay active while connecting with others in a supportive, community-focused environment.
“The sign-up period began on Monday, Feb. 9, but you still have time to join the challenge,” said Shavita Wood-Warren, mobile nutrition lab coordinator, who is leading the initiative.
Walking Like a CHAMPION is designed to increase regular physical activity and reduce risk factors associated with chronic diseases, including obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and certain cancers.
The program incorporates walking, aerobic dance and muscle-strengthening activities tailored to all fitness levels. Sessions focus on building strength, endurance and confidence while allowing participants to progress at their own pace.
The challenge promotes accountability and engagement through shared goals and positive competition.
