Johnson Hopes to Redefine Pet Care with The Bark Park

Alumnus Brings Unique Pet Haven to Birmingham
Emondre Johnson has loved animals for as long as he can remember. As a child, he spent hours in the library reading about different species and their behaviors. In high school, he interned at veterinary clinics across Birmingham, Ala. By 2020, he had earned his degree in animal science from Alabama A&M, laying the foundation for what would become his dream business.
That dream is now a reality with The Bark Park, a pet-care destination designed to offer more than just daycare and grooming. Johnson’s vision combines top-tier services – including daycare, boarding, grooming, a coffee bar, and professional pet photography, within a welcoming, community-driven space.
“I created The Bark Park because I’ve always known I wanted to work with animals, but not as a veterinarian,” says Johnson. “With my background in animal science, hands-on experience in veterinary clinics, and deep understanding of dog behavior, I knew I could build something special – not just a business, but a welcoming environment where pets and their owners can enjoy quality services and a sense of community.”
Set to open February 22, The Bark Park will offer a carefully designed environment where pets are grouped based on temperament and social compatibility rather than size.
“The Bark Park offers more than just pet services – it’s a lifestyle destination,” says Johnson. “Owners can relax at our coffee bar while their pets enjoy safe play, professional grooming, and even high-quality pet photography, creating lasting memories.”
Beyond pet care, The Bark Park will also host workshops for pet owners.
“The workshops will cover such topcis as understanding dog behavior and body language, and helping owners recognize signs of stress, anxiety, or discomfort in their pets,” says Johnson. “We’ll also offer basic obedience training, positive reinforcement techniques, and canine first aid, so owners feel prepared to handle minor injuries and know when professional care is needed. Additionally, we’ll focus on nutrition, enrichment activities, and socialization best practices to ensure pets live their happiest, healthiest lives.”
For Johnson, who shares his home with three dogs – Spade, Luna, and Woodie, this venture is the culmination of a lifelong passion for animals and entrepreneurship.
“My family is excited and happy for me. They know I’ve been at this my whole life.”
