Alabama A&M Leads Meharry Summer Program with Largest Student Cohort

Taylor Charts Path as AAMU Biology Scholar, Future Physician
From the moment he joined his elementary school's Science Olympiad team in the fourth
grade, William Taylor discovered a fascination with the human body that would ultimately shape his future.
What began as afternoons studying bones and muscles for an anatomy competition has
evolved into a clear calling: becoming a physician dedicated to serving others.
Today, that journey is taking shape at Alabama A&M, where Taylor is pursuing a Biology degree while balancing the demands of Division
I baseball and preparing for a career in medicine. The combination has challenged
him to develop the discipline, resilience, and leadership that define both successful
student-athletes and future physicians. As one of the nation's leading HBCUs in STEM
education, Taylor says AAMU has provided him with the academic foundation to pursue
ambitious goals.
“Alabama A&M has helped me grow academically, personally, and as a leader,” said Taylor.
“Attending an HBCU has also reinforced the importance of representation in healthcare
and inspired me to use my education to make a positive impact in underserved communities.”
That preparation has been further strengthened through the Meharry BS/MD Summer Enrichment
Program, where Taylor recently participated for a second consecutive year. As a student-athlete,
he says he especially valued building relationships with peers.
“Participating in my second year of the Meharry BS/MD Program has strengthened my
knowledge of human anatomy, cellular and molecular biology, and physics while preparing
me for medical school,” said Taylor. “The program allowed me to build relationships
with like-minded students from HBCUs, including fellow student-athletes who understand
the balance between academics and athletics.”
The Columbus, Ga. native envisions a future built on meaningful relationships, and
service beyond the exam room. Whether mentoring future healthcare professionals or
improving healthcare access in underserved communities, he hopes his career reflects
the same values that have guided his journey thus far.
“Through shadowing physicians, taking challenging science courses, and attending the
Meharry program, my childhood interest has grown into a strong commitment to becoming
a physician,” he says.
