King’s Passion for Women’s Health Begins with Family, Grows at AAMU

For Caitlyn King, a childhood interest evolved into a clear sense of purpose through an experience close to home. Her dream of becoming a pediatrician started before she fully understood everything the profession involved. That interests became more specific as she grew up.

“During my sister’s pregnancy, I found myself constantly researching pregnancy, labor, and delivery so I could better understand what she was going through,” said King. “Watching my niece be born and seeing the care the physicians provided throughout that experience had a huge impact on me. It showed me how much compassion, knowledge, and reassurance a physician can bring during such an important moment in someone’s life. That experience inspired me to pursue obstetrics and gynecology and strengthened my commitment to becoming a physician.”

The Alabama A&M biology major recently completed the Meharry Medical College BS/MD Summer Program, where she joined fellow aspiring physicians for an immersive experience. The program strengthened her preparation for medical school while reinforcing the path she first envisioned years ago.

“Being part of the Meharry BS/MD Program has meant that my hard work is being recognized,” she said. “Coming from an HBCU, it’s encouraging to know that people believe in my potential and are investing in my future.”

Hosted by Meharry Medical College, the summer program brings together students from historically Black colleges and universities to explore the academic, clinical and professional expectations of medical education. Through direct engagement with physicians, medical students and healthcare leaders, participants gain insight into the responsibilities and opportunities that await them as future healthcare professionals.

For King, one of the program’s greatest benefits came from learning alongside professionals whose journeys reflected experiences similar to her own.

“One of the biggest things I’ve taken away from this experience is hearing the stories of physicians and medical students who look like me and have overcome challenges similar to mine,” she said. “Seeing people who are passionate, accomplished, and still true to themselves has made my dream feel even more attainable.”

King says Alabama A&M has provided an academic foundation and supportive environment that has helped prepared her for opportunities like Meharry.

“My experiences at Alabama A&M University have helped me become more confident in myself and my abilities,” she said. “I’ve been surrounded by professors, mentors, and classmates who genuinely want to see each other succeed, and that has pushed me to challenge myself academically while believing that I belong in medicine. Alabama A&M has strengthened my desire to become a physician who gives back to my community and provides compassionate, quality care to patients who deserve to feel seen and heard.”

King plans to specialize in obstetrics and gynecology, where she hopes to build lasting relationships with patients during some of the most significant moments of their lives. Her goal is to create an environment where every patient feels respected, understood and confident in the care they receive.
