As anticipation builds for the inaugural HBCU Classic at Wrigley Field on May 2, Alabama A&M University alumna Camille Allen is making her AAMU mark on a new generation of scholars. Allen, a Chicago native, serves as principal of KIPP Academy Chicago, where she leads with a focus on academic excellence, equity and opportunity for all students.

“As principal, I’m focused on building a school where students feel challenged, supported and inspired every day,” Allen said. “My work centers on developing teachers, strengthening instruction and creating a culture where excellence and joy coexist. I’m especially driven by ensuring that students from underserved communities have access to opportunities that open doors for their futures.”

Allen’s journey in education began in Huntsville, Alabama, where she taught fourth grade before expanding her experience in Minneapolis and eventually returning home to Chicago. Since 2018, she has helped shape KIPP Academy Chicago’s instructional practices and school culture, first as assistant principal and now as principal.

She credits her foundation to AAMU’s College of Education, where she earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in elementary education.

“I chose Alabama A&M after visiting my sister on campus during her freshman year,” said Allen. “Seeing her growth and transformation made me want that same opportunity. AAMU became a place where I could grow, find my purpose and confidently navigate my next chapter.”

While on The Hill, she was actively involved across campus, including membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and participation in the House Arrest 2 Championship Dance Team, experiences that strengthened her leadership, discipline and commitment to service.

“Alabama A&M gave me more than a degree — it gave me purpose,” said Allen. “It prepared me to walk into the classroom confident and ready, while grounding me in the values of service, excellence and leadership that I carry with me today.”

Allen said one of her proudest accomplishments has been her growth from classroom teacher to school leader within the KIPP network — a journey defined by impact.

“For me, the real achievement is seeing students succeed and educators thrive,” she said.

Her time on The Hill also instilled a lasting appreciation for community — a lesson she continues to apply in her leadership.

“Joining organizations allowed me to build lifelong bonds with individuals who pushed me to grow, stay focused and dream bigger,” said Allen. “That sense of connection and accountability is something I still carry with me today.”

Now, as Chicago prepares to host a historic celebration of HBCU culture and athletics, Allen is eager to return to the stands and celebrate alongside fellow Bulldogs.

“This is history in the making,” she said. “I’m most excited about the energy of being surrounded by HBCU pride, reconnecting with fellow Bulldogs and celebrating the culture that makes our institutions so special.”

For Allen, this weekend's event represents legacy, pride and the continued impact of HBCUs far beyond campus.

“I am proud to be a graduate of Alabama A&M University and to carry its values into my work each day. My goal is to continue creating opportunities for students and to lead in a way that reflects the excellence instilled in me on The Hill.”
