AAMU Alumnus Discovered Passion for Photography and Storytelling on The Hill
Milhouse's Photography Showcased in Detroit's Michigan Central Station
The striking work of Alabama A&M University alumnus Justin Milhouse is now on grand display in his hometown of Detroit. The 9-foot-tall portraits, celebrating the reopening of Michigan Central Station, are hard to miss. Milhouse, a proud Detroit native, credits AAMU for igniting his passion for photography.
“I discovered my love for photography and storytelling while I was a business student at AAMU,” he recalls. “In 2009, I created a blog featuring fellow students, showcasing their creativity and talents.”
That photo blog, “Fresh Cool Dope,” was the catalyst for Milhouse’s career, leading to the creation of his Fresh Cool Dope brand, his own photography studio, and a global portfolio. Inspired by the artistic expressions of his grandfather, Donald L. Robinson, Milhouse began exploring his creative voice while on The Hill. The Fresh Cool Dope brand quickly became a platform for his expanding collection of photos and videos.
Milhouse’s portraits are featured in the “Faces of Michigan Central” exhibit, which highlights the diverse individuals connected to the historic train
station, including its recent six-year renovation by Ford Motor Company. The exhibit
will run until August 31st, every Friday and Saturday.
“Photography is just part of storytelling to me,” he says. “I spoke with each person
first, learning about their lives and connections to the station before capturing
their photos.”
Milhouse’s artistic journey has taken him to Morocco, Bali, Cuba, Spain, South Africa, Vietnam, and many cities throughout the United States. His diverse portfolio includes collaborations with the Skillman Foundation, Adidas, Martell, National Geographic, Gucci, ESPN, professional athletes, musicians, and actors. His work has appeared in Hour Magazine, Chevy Roads, The Detroit Free Press, The New York Times, and national ad campaigns.
In 2016, Milhouse was selected as an inaugural fellow for the “Facing Change: Documenting Detroit” photojournalism project. He also participated in the “Detroit Inspires” partnership between the Detroit Pistons and Canon USA, which highlighted the city through photography and videography. One of his pieces was featured in “The New Black Vanguard: Photography Between Art and Fashion” at the Detroit Institute of Arts, which subsequently acquired it for their permanent collection. Milhouse enjoys sharing his artistic journey with students, promoting creative expression as a professional and personal pursuit.
“Alabama A&M exposed me to a diverse group of creative individuals from across the country,” adds Milhouse. “It really was the starting point for my art and my passion.”
