Robinson, Fletcher Credit AAMU Professors for their Success
Alumni Reunite on The Hill for Ebony Project
Alabama A&M University alumni Mayah Robinson and Tia’Ja Fletcher made a triumphant return to their alma mater last week for a special Ebony Magazine project in the works. The dynamic duo, who have built impressive careers in media, collaborated once more, capturing the essence of AAMU through interviews with students, faculty, and staff. It was a reunion long overdue, as Robinson and Fletcher hadn’t seen each other in person since earning their communications media degrees in 2018.
“We met in a communications class and have been friends ever since,” Robinson reminisced. “AAMU taught us that it’s all about connections and who you know. Tia’Ja reached out because she knew I still have a passion for photography and communication, and when she said, ‘Hey, I got a gig for you,’ I couldn’t resist the opportunity to work with Ebony.”
Fletcher, hailing from Las Vegas, has made significant strides in her career. As a
producer and director for Clear Scope Media, a prominent media production company
in Dallas, she’s worked with major brands like Ebony and BET.
“We do everything from live events to content creation for brands. We’re deeply embedded
in the gospel industry too,” she explained. Her journey at Clear Scope Media began
as an editor, climbing the ranks to producer and director within two years.
Robinson’s career has been equally remarkable. A Huntsville native, she interned at
WAFF, the NBC affiliate in Huntsville, which led to a production role. Her career
path then veered into radio, where she became a morning show spokesperson at WEUP
and ventured into advertising sales. Today, Robinson is a management analyst at Redstone
Arsenal’s Space and Missile Defense Command.
“I’m the first face new employees see, handling onboarding and ensuring they’re set
up and comfortable,” she shared.
Both alumni attribute their success to the invaluable networking lessons from their
AAMU professors. Fletcher recounted how an AAMU connection landed her the job at Clear
Scope. “A classmate in Dallas told me about an opportunity with my current boss, and
that’s how I got in,” she said.
Robinson echoed this sentiment, crediting Fletcher for the Ebony opportunity.
During their time on campus, Robinson and Fletcher made sure to visit Semaj Robinson’s class, their former professor and the Communication Media Program Coordinator. “Seeing Mr. Robinson today was a full-circle moment. He was the first person to ever make me a director,” Fletcher said fondly.
Robinson emphasized the importance of teamwork and respect, lessons she cherished from AAMU. “A&M taught me that it takes a village. Treat people with respect and give them the effort you deserve, and you’ll go far,” she advised.
Looking ahead, Robinson aims to transition into communications and public affairs within the government, while Fletcher has her sights set on filmmaking. For now, Fletcher is gearing up to direct The Reunion Tour starting in September.
Returning to AAMU was a heartfelt experience for both alumnae. “As alumni, we often don’t come back to give back,” Robinson noted. “I encourage all alumni to seize opportunities to support your HBCU, just like this one.”
Fletcher summed up their sentiments perfectly.
“It’s so great to be back. A&M is special because you’re lucky enough to have teachers
who truly care about you.”
