Senior Accounting Major Honored for Outstanding Academic Achievement
Pettway Named AAMU’s First PCAOB Scholar, Awarded $15,000 Scholarship
Amberly Pettway has been named a Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) Scholar for the 2024-25 academic year. Pettway, a senior accounting major from Mobile, Alabama, is the first Alabama A&M student to receive this prestigious scholarship, which includes a $15,000 award.
The PCAOB, an organization dedicated to overseeing audits of public companies, has awarded scholarships since 2011 to undergraduate and graduate accounting students in accredited U.S. colleges and universities. The scholarships aim to support students who are likely to pursue careers in auditing and encourage them to remain in the field.
“I was speechless when I learned I had been chosen as a PCAOB Scholar,” Pettway shared. “This scholarship is a testament to the hard work I’ve put in, and it will help me focus on my final semesters at Alabama A&M. I can take a load off from working and totally focus on my senior year, the organizations I am involved with, and end the year strong. I’m truly proud to see my efforts recognized in such a meaningful way.”
Pettway plans to use the scholarship to cover tuition, books, and other academic expenses during her senior year at AAMU. She expressed deep gratitude for the support and guidance she received from her professors and mentors at the University. One of those professors, Dr. Felicia Farrar, an associate professor of accounting and coordinator of the accounting program, nominated Pettway for the PCAOB scholarship.
“Amber is an ambitious, dedicated student and I am thrilled she was selected for this honor,” Farrar commented.
Pettway says she chose Alabama A&M University because she was looking for a community where she could thrive both academically and personally. As a member of the Alabama A&M Accounting and Financial Clubs, she has built significant relationships and networked with industry professionals.
Looking ahead, Pettway plans to pursue a master’s degree in accounting after graduation and eventually sit for the CPA exam. Her long-term goal is to work as a CPA auditor at an accounting firm.
“My time on The Hill has been both enjoyable and transformative,” Pettway reflected. “I’ve grown immensely and learned so much about my future profession. The diverse environment at Alabama A&M has shaped my character and inspired me to strive for excellence in everything I do.”
