Senior Aims to Further Biology Studies and Mental Health Advocacy with Award
Hardnett Crowned Miss Black Rocket City 2024, Wins $1,500 Scholarship
Alabama A&M University senior Zyon Hardnett has been crowned Miss Black Rocket City 2024. The biology major from Jemison, Alabama, competed in the scholarship pageant earlier this month and was awarded a $1,500 scholarship.
Held in Madison, Alabama, the pageant offers young Black women a unique opportunity to showcase their talents, gain confidence, and experience personal growth.
“Participating in the Miss Black Rocket City Scholarship Pageant was incredibly important to me as a rising senior at Alabama A&M University, majoring in biology with aspirations of becoming a travel registered nurse,” said Hardnett.
“Beyond the financial aspect, the pageant provided a powerful platform to advocate for issues close to my heart. My platform, OASIS—Overcoming Anxiety and Stress in School—focuses on offering resources and support for students facing mental health challenges. Through the pageant, I was able to highlight the importance of mental health and promote strategies for managing stress and anxiety among students.”
Hardnett is also an active member of the campus community. She participates in the AAMU Gospel Choir, Melanated Doctors, The National Society of Leadership and Success, and Ward Modeling Troop Incorporated.
