Fourth Annual HBCU Swingman Event Set for Philadelphia, July 10

Three Invited to Participate in HBCU Swingman Classic
The Alabama A&M University baseball program will have three players competing in the
Fourth Annual HBCU Swingman Classic on Friday, July 10 at Citizens Banks Park in Philadelphia,
Pa.
Outfielder Brycen Hammonds, right-handed pitcher Anthony Mateo and utility player Tervell Johnson will be competing in the game, which is broadcasted on the MLB Network at 6 p.m.
(CT) on July 10.
Hammonds batted .278 in 54 games last season. He registered 59 hits, including nine
doubles and six home runs, while driving in 35 and scoring 32 times. The Madison,
Ala. native went 19-of-23 in stolen base attempts and drew 20 walks. Mateo led the
team in victories (four) and strikeouts (47). The Lynn, Mass. native went 4-6, with
one complete game. He finished with a 6.52 ERA in 77.1 innings pitched. Johnson, who
played in 50 games for the Bulldogs, batted .268, with 41 hits. He registered a team-high
eight home runs, six doubles and pair of triples, while bringing in a team-high 39
RBIs, along with scoring 24 times.
The pool of players was hand-selected by a committee that includes MLB, scouts and
Baseball Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr., who spearheaded the event with the inaugural
game in 2023.
