The YARD Reaches Classic Milestone

AAMU Competes in Pitch Competition
The YARD, presented by Vulcan Materials, was a featured partner at the Birmingham
Business Alliance’s Code the Classic event during the activities associated with the
annual Magic City Classic. The annual career and tech expo connects HBCU students
from across the state with companies hiring for paid internships and jobs.
During the event, The YARD hosted its THINK BIG NOW innovation pitch competition between Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University
to award scholarships and internships to students with big ideas on ways to improve
their HBCU campus and communities.
The YARD pitch competition was followed by a leadership roundtable with business
and government leaders, including U.S. Senator Doug Jones and Vulcan Materials Company
CEO Thomas Hill.
Programming also included a student debate on educational needs for future career
needs and immersive networking studio that connected student talent with prospective
employers across the state.
Among the AAMU winners were: 1st Place: Justin Lindberg and Christian Henderson - $4,000; 2nd Place: Demarius Lewis and Chris Tony - $2,500; and 3rd Place: Olasubomi Olawepo - $1,500.
