AAMU Welcomes New Students During Freshman Convocation

Class of 2030 Starts Journey on The Hill with Annual Torch Lighting Ceremony
Alabama A&M University officially welcomed new students during the annual Freshman
Torch Lighting ceremony Saturday. Thousands of polo-clad freshmen filled the main
floor and seats of the AAMU Event Center to start their journeys during the traditional
passing of the torch to new Bulldogs.
In his welcoming remarks, President Daniel K. Wims celebrated the preparation and
diversity of the Class of 2030.
“This exceptional class represents the rich diversity and far-reaching spirit of the
University with a preliminary registration of 2,200 first-time freshman students,”
said President Daniel K. Wims. “This class includes students from 37 states. We also
welcome international students representing eight countries. The class is comprised
of 59 percent women and 41 percent men. This remarkable cohort has an average grade
point average of 3.25 and an average ACT of over 18.”
Keynote speaker and AAMU Alumnus Craig Mitchell shared a message that echoed the mantra
of great leaders and influencers of his personal story and that of Alabama A&M. The
speech centered the keys to climbing “The Hill.”
“It’s going to take instinct, pressure, and purpose,” said Mitchell. “That’s what
it takes to climb the hill. This place was built on hard work and instinct, and a
refusal to give up. No matter where you’ve come from, today you have a 4.0. Keep the
main thing the main thing.”
The class marks another chapter in the ongoing growth of Alabama A&M. University officials
joined Mitchell in challenging incoming students to honor their new start through
striving for excellence.
“The torch that you will hold tonight is more than a symbol of tradition,” said Vice
President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. “It carries the knowledge,
responsibility, and the Bulldog spirit of those who have come before you. How brightly
it shines depends on you and how you choose to carry it.”
The next week is filled with several opportunities for freshman to continue to become
acclimated on their new campus. Fall classes begin Thursday, August 20.
