Alabama A&M student preparing for a future in healthcare

Traylor Hopes to Combine Love for Music with Career in Dentistry
Braylen Traylor believes healing begins long before a procedure. The Alabama A&M student
recently expanded his understanding of patient care alongside fellow aspiring healthcare
professionals when he completed the Meharry Medical College BS/MD Summer Program.
As he pursues a career in dentistry, the junior biology major from Atlanta says he
wants to combine his interest to build trust with patients.
"I hope to become a dentist who combines my passion for oral healthcare with my gift
for music to help reduce dental anxiety," Traylor said. "I want to create a welcoming
environment where patients of all ages feel comfortable, understood, and excited to
care for their oral health."
That philosophy centers on helping patients feel heard, supported and confident throughout
their care. Traylor hopes every visit creates an opportunity to build trust while
encouraging lifelong habits that promote better oral health.
Designed to prepare aspiring healthcare professionals for the demands of medical and
dental careers, the highly competitive Meharry program brought together students from
11 historically Black colleges and universities for immersive learning experiences.
Participants engaged in physician mentorship, clinical observations, professional
development and discussions that offered a firsthand look at healthcare education
and practice.
"The impact I want to make is to be fully invested in the growth and mindset of every
patient, from pediatric to adult," said Traylor. "Through education, encouragement,
and compassionate care, I want to help people overcome fear, build confidence, and
prioritize preventive oral health."
Traylor is among a growing number of Alabama A&M students pursuing careers in healthcare
through the University's strong STEM programs and partnerships that provide early
exposure to professional education. Opportunities like these allow students to connect
classroom learning with clinical experiences while building relationships with healthcare
professionals and peers who share similar goals.
"Above all, I hope to leave a legacy of authenticity," he said. "I want to be remembered
as a dentist who remained true to myself, served others with compassion, and used
my unique gifts to change how people experience dentistry."
