Young to Lead Marching Maroon and White, AAMU Ensembles

Alabama A&M Names William J. Young New Director of Bands
After conducting a national search, Alabama A&M University is pleased to announce
the appointment of Mr. William J. Young as the new Director of Bands. A highly respected music educator, performer, and administrator,
Mr. Young brings more than 25 years of distinguished experience in music education,
ensemble development, and arts leadership to the Bulldog family.
Young currently serves as Associate Director of Bands at Southern University and A&M
College, following a successful tenure as Associate Director of Bands at Langston
University. Across his career, he has demonstrated a consistent record of building
high-performing programs, cultivating musical excellence, and establishing cultures
rooted in discipline, precision, and pride. His ensembles have earned Superior Ratings
in UIL (University Interscholastic League) Marching Band and Concert & Sight-Reading
evaluations, reflecting his instructional expertise and commitment to excellence.
In addition to his collegiate experience, Young has served as Director of Fine Arts
in two school districts, where his leadership elevated program standards, strengthened
curriculum alignment, and expanded access and opportunities for students across all
fine arts disciplines. A proud alumnus of Southern University and A&M College, he
performed with the internationally acclaimed “Human Jukebox” Marching Band - an experience
that continues to shape his dynamic and innovative approach to teaching and performance.
Young holds a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Concordia University
and is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Music Education at William Carey University.
He is nationally sought after as an arranger, clinician, consultant, and adjudicator,
his influence extends across band programs and fine arts initiatives throughout the
country. He is also a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
Alabama A&M University also extends its sincere gratitude to Mr. Carlton Wright for
his 13 years of dedicated service as Director of Bands. Under his leadership, the
program experienced meaningful growth and sustained excellence, leaving a strong foundation
for continued success.
