Board of Trustees Vote to Extend President’s Contract

The Alabama A&M University (AAMU) Board of Trustees voted during its board meeting on June 26 to extend President Daniel K. Wims contract to December 31, 2032. Therefore, confirming Wims for ten years of leadership as president.

Wims’ initial contract was extended to December 31, 2030 with the new extension and salary increase now giving him an additional two years at the helm of the largest Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in Alabama. The President’s contract extension and compensation adjustment followed the Board’s annual presidential evaluation. This second contract extension aligns with the university’s priority of stability and leadership to achieve continued growth.

“I thank the Board of Trustees for the opportunity to continue serving Alabama A&M. The collective commitment and dedication of our administrative team, faculty, staff, students and alumni is to be commended. I look forward to our continued growth and success as we elevate Alabama A&M to produce the brightest students to become leaders who are change makers,” said Wims.

The board evaluation was comprised of several categories including Problem Solving and Decision Making, Personnel, Academic Planning and Administration, Fiscal Management, Student Affairs, External Relations,  Board Relationships and Community Partnerships.
Dr. Wims became the twelfth president in January 2022 after serving as Provost and Vice President of Research and Sponsored Programs for 12 years. Under his leadership, AAMU has been able to strategically maneuver through the challenges of today’s higher education landscape. 
 
A few accomplishments of the Wims’ administration are:

  • Three Year Consecutive Record-Breaking Enrollment (Fall 2023, Fall 2024 and Fall 2025)
  • Campus Renovations: New Student Union & New Science Building (currently under construction); Completed Residence Hall Renovations (Morris Hall and Stephens Hall);
    Creek Erosion Repair & Hillcrest Restoration
  • Increased Research Funding, Federal and State Appropriations
  • Huntsville Hospital partnership to open the first primary care clinic in North Huntsville
  • New Academic Offerings:
    - First in Alabama to offer a Bachelor of Science Degree in Artificial Intelligence
    Department of Sport Management
    - Master’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies & Master’s Degree in Food Science Business
    - Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction
    - Ph.D. in Social Work
    - College Bridge Dual Enrollment Program
