Alabama A&M University Welcomes New Artist with Gallery Exhibition

The Alabama A&M University Art Gallery is hosting a new exhibition - on display October 16 through November 10 - entitled “An Introduction,” featuring the work of new Assistant Professor of Drawing and Painting, Ashlee René Thompson.

Thompson is a contemporary visual artist from Montgomery, Alabama, who works within the realm of painting and mixed media to explore the relationships of materials while also examining femininity, societal pressures, and cultural norms in the South.

“I am so excited to be here at Alabama A&M," says Thompson. "For the longest time my dream has been to combine my two passions in life: art and working with students. I have already enjoyed getting to know the AAMU community this fall and am looking forward to seeing the talent and passion grow in my classrooms. My hope is that this exhibition serves as a gateway for conversations about important topics in society and allows students the opportunity to engage with abstract works created by their professor.”

Thompson earned her bachelor’s degree in fine/studio arts and master’s degree in liberal arts from Auburn University at Montgomery, and has a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Alabama.

The AAMU Department of Visual, Performing, and Communication Arts will host an opening reception in the gallery on Thursday, October 18 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. All visitors are welcome.

Thompson’s work has been featured in several international art exhibitions in London, Paris, Milan, Venice, and Florence during the last year.
