AAMU Students Join Meharry Medical College’s Largest BS/MD Cohort

Meharry Welcomes 90 HBCU Students for Program Designed to Prepare Future Doctors
This summer, 14 Alabama A&M University students are part of Meharry Medical College’s 2025 BS/MD Program – the largest contingent of any participating institution. The six-week summer initiative brings together 90 undergraduates from 12 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
Designed to prepare the next generation of physicians, the BS/MD Program provides students with intensive academic training, leadership development, and medical school preparation. Participants gain exposure to the rigors of the medical field through MCAT prep, mentoring from healthcare professionals, and a structured curriculum focused on academic excellence and community impact.
“The program is not only an academic pipeline, but also a promise to nurture talented, mission-aligned students as they prepare to meet the health needs of underserved communities,” said Mitzy Johnson, Ed.D., Director of Special Programs.
Participating schools include: AAMU, Albany State University, Alcorn State University, Fisk University, Florida A&M University, Grambling State University, Hampton University, Jackson State University, Southern University, Tennessee State University, Tuskegee University, and Virginia Union University.
Beyond the BS/MD cohort, Meharry is also offering The Princeton Review’s MCAT prep course to 30 rising seniors and a DAT prep course to five students pursuing dentistry – further reflecting the institution’s commitment to building excellence across all health professions.
