Alabama A&M Honors Student Shanks Attends NASBA Conference in Philadelphia

Alabama A&M University honors student Joshua Shanks, a sophomore accounting major from Montgomery, Alabama., is making impressive strides in his academic and professional journey, elevated by national recognition, scholarship support, and leadership development opportunities that reflect AAMU’s growing influence in the business and accounting arena.

This summer, Shanks was selected to attend the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) Student Leadership Conference, held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The prestigious event brought together top-performing accounting students from across the country to engage with seasoned professionals, explore emerging trends in the accounting field, and sharpen their leadership potential.

“I enjoyed being able to connect with like-minded peers in my major and meet top professionals in my career field,” said Shanks. “This opportunity left me refreshed, motivated, and confident in knowing I have a seat at the table.”

His participation was made possible through AAMU’s robust accounting program, guided by Dr. Felicia Farrar, Director of the MBA Program. Under her mentorship, the accounting program continues to provide transformative experiences for students with strong academic potential.

Further solidifying his rising trajectory, Shanks was named a finalist for the 2025–2026 Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) Deloitte Foundation Accounting Scholarship Program – Cohort 4, and was awarded an $8,000 scholarship. The award recognizes his academic excellence, commitment to leadership, and alignment with the values upheld by the legacy of Justice Thurgood Marshall.

“I am very grateful for receiving this scholarship,” said Shanks. “It is a testament to my hard work and faith in what God is doing in my life.”

In addition to his national engagements, Shanks is giving back to his hometown this summer through the Montgomery Mayor’s Internship Program, where he is interning under the city's chief financial officer. His internship includes direct involvement with municipal accounting, budgeting, and risk management processes, giving him hands-on exposure to public finance.

As he prepares for the Fall 2025 semester, Shanks says he’s more focused than ever on his future in the accounting profession – thanks in large part to the support, exposure, and mentorship he’s received at Alabama A&M.

“Dr. Farrar is deeply committed to our success, not only by opening doors to meaningful opportunities but also by equipping us with the tools to excel,” said Shanks. “Thanks to her guidance and the support of Alabama A&M University, I’ve seen tremendous growth in my confidence since arriving on The Hill just last year. I’m excited to continue my journey here and look forward to what’s ahead with great anticipation.”
