AAMU Enters Top 10 Military Friendly Schools

Alabama A&M University (AAMU) has earned the designation as a TOP TEN Military Friendly School for 2019-2020. This is the highest recognition that colleges and universities can earn as a military friendly school. Since 2014, AAMU has competed against community colleges and universities that are categorized as small, large, private, public, or Tier 1 and Tier 2 research institutions.

Its five-year journey has led to AAMU earning the recognition as a “Designated” MFS in 2014 and 2015, “Bronze Level” MFS in 2016, “Gold Level” MFS in 2017 and 2018, and last—but certainly not least—the highest recognition of all--TOP TEN in 2019-2020!!

In order to accomplish this goal, AAMU exceeded the standards by 95.24% in academic policies and compliance, 83.84% in admissions and orientation, 66.67% in culture and commitment, 51.50% in financial aid and assistance, 30.43% in graduation and career, and 53.14% in military student support and retention.

Active duty, veterans and dependents of veterans have identified biology, business administration and management, communications, computer science, criminal justice, engineering, environmental science, hospitality administration/management, psychology, and social work as their top 10 degrees of choice.

AAMU is a fully accredited, nearly 145-year-old land-grant institution located in Huntsville, Alabama. With more than 6,000 students (approximately 8 percent receiving VA educational benefits), AAMU has steadily increased its offerings to cater to the multi-faceted pool of military students.

In 2014, the office of veterans affairs and disability services created a Veterans Center. This location serves as a safe place for veterans and dependents to study, conduct meetings, socialize, and de-stress. Additionally, to honor Purple Heart Veterans, the Bulldog Veterans Student Organization spearheaded a project to designate three (3) reserved purple heart parking spaces campus-wide. Scholarships are also available for veterans and dependents who excel academically.
