Pearson Named Lead Scholar in National HBCU Program

Jacob Ryan Pearson of Lithia Springs, Georgia, a graduate student in Alabama A&M University’s Master of Social Work program, has been named a Lead Scholar in the My HBCU Matters Scholar Academy, part of the Our HBCUs Matter Foundation. He is one of 60 HBCU Scholars selected nationwide for the 2025 cohort. A 2025 Fort Valley State University graduate, Pearson has now earned this prestigious honor for the third consecutive year. He previously served as a 2024 HBCU White House Scholar and as an undergraduate scholar in the My HBCU Matters program.

“This recognition is not only a personal honor but also an opportunity to continue uplifting the legacy of our HBCUs while gaining national leadership experience,” Pearson said.

The Scholars Academy provides national leadership development, career planning workshops, mentorship, and networking with HBCU leaders and industry professionals. Pearson’s professional goals include becoming a licensed clinical social worker specializing in sports social work, with plans to provide mental health and life skills support to student-athletes. He also intends to grow his nonprofit, Bridging The Gap Coaching, to mentor youth nationwide through mental, physical, spiritual, emotional, and academic development.

“I am committed to representing Alabama A&M with pride, engaging in initiatives that support HBCU students, and expanding my own capacity to serve communities nationwide,” he said.

As a Lead Scholar, Pearson will participate in national conferences, virtual leadership training, and service initiatives that benefit HBCU communities.

“This academy gives me the tools, guidance, and connections to make a tangible difference, both for my peers at Alabama A&M and for the broader HBCU community,” said Pearson. “Being a part of this program is more than an honor; it is a responsibility to give back, inspire others, and continue the legacy of excellence that HBCUs have built.”
