Alabama A&M University Dancin’ Divas Captain Mekhi Miller and Co-Captain Jayla Wilson will step into the national spotlight this weekend as they lead the Divas onto the field with the Marching Maroon & White Band at the 2025 Pepsi National Battle of the Bands.

The showcase, celebrating the artistry and cultural legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), takes place Saturday, August 23, at NRG Stadium in Houston. It marks Alabama A&M’s third appearance at the prestigious event, following performances in 2015 and 2022.

Miller, a senior biology major from Nashville, Tennessee, says this performance carries deep personal meaning. “We have so many performances, and they’re back to back, but this one is different,” she said. “We’re putting boots on the ground, coming in heavy this year, and for me it’s personal. My co-captain and I grew up together in Nashville, and now as seniors, we want to go out with a bang.”

Wilson, also a senior from Nashville, echoed the excitement and responsibility that comes with leading the Divas. “This is more than just a performance – it’s about representing AAMU and showing the country the talent and dedication we bring,” said Wilson. “Growing up with Mekhi, and now sharing this stage, makes this moment even more special.”

For both leaders, the performance is not just about precision and energy, but also about honoring the investment of those who have poured into them. “We’ve seen so many people come through this program, and being so close to AAMU in Nashville, we know how much support we’ve had,” said Miller. “Our families and fans have always been there for us. I just want to give them a show they can be proud of. Tomorrow, we’ll represent Alabama A&M on the national stage, and we’re ready to leave everything out there.”
