ASRHA Chapter Promotes Rural Medicine

The Alabama A&M University Chapter of the Alabama Student Rural Health Association has pulled together a slate of activities for Rural Medicine & Health Professions Week that will run through April 5. Activities are sponsored in part by the AAMU Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences.
A noon five-person rural medicine roundtable discussion focusing on “Addressing 21st Century Healthcare Challenges in Rural & Underserved Communities” took place in Dawson Building Auditorium on Monday, April 1. Among the participants were: Scott Berry, MD - Office of Family Health Education & Research - UAB Huntsville; Lauren Beggs - Rural Medicine Program, UAB School of Medicine; James Leeper, MD - Department of Community & Rural Medicine – University of Alabama; Corey Key, MS - Human Environmental Science Program - University of Alabama; and Judy Smith, RN, MPH - Area Administrator, Alabama Dept. Public Health (Northern District).
Later on April 1, Patricia Martin, MD, internal medicine, Huntsville Hospital was scheduled to provide “A Clinical Perspective of Rural Medicine Practice” in 311 Carter Hall at 6 p.m.
Additionally, career paths in the health professions were addressed in a panel discussion on Tuesday, April 2, in the LRC Auditorium at 12:30 p.m. Participants included David Bramm, MD - director, UAB Rural Medicine Program & HRPI; Coretta Miller-Collins, CRNP - Hematology/Oncology Associates of Alabama; Stephen Williams, cancer biology PhD candidate, Meharry Medical College; Tunde Smith, cancer biology PhD candidate, Meharry Medical College; Conwin Vanterpool, MD - Biological & Environmental Sciences – AAMU; and Charles Holsey, MD/PhD - Biological & Environmental Sciences – AAMU.
On Wednesday, April 3, discussions on career paths in the health professions will continue with three additional panelists: Nicole Haughton, MD - Pediatrics - Women & Children's Hospital; Nikaela Flournoy, MS, PhD - Alabama Center for Ecological Resilience, University of Alabama; and Amber Neal - Via College of Osteopathic Medicine - Auburn University.
AAMU ASRHA will end its week-long observance on Friday, April 5, with a health professions school tour reserved for prior registers participants. The tour will include visits to Vanderbilt School of Medicine and Graduate Studies and Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry, Medicine and Graduate Studies.
