Alabama A&M Hosts Visiting Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence

The Institute of International Education (IIE) recently selected Alabama A&M University to host a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence from Rwanda during the 2023-24 academic year. The Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board selected Dr. Marie Chantal Mutimawurugo, the Crops and Horticultural Sciences expert in the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine at the University of Rwanda.

“I am truly honored with the visiting faculty opportunity provided to me at Alabama A&M University. I hope to gain valuable experience of the U.S. agricultural and food systems models to strengthen agricultural research, teaching, and outreach programs in Rwanda,” states Mutimawurugo.

Mutimawurugo will co-teach courses in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences in the College of Agricultural, Life and Natural Sciences at Alabama A&M University. She will also provide workshops to faculty and students at AAMU and various U.S. institutions on complex challenges to tropical agriculture and food systems research and education in Rwanda. Mutimawurugo will work closely with Dr. Zachary Senwo, a professor in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences.

Senwo, an expert in soil microbial biochemistry, environmental science and toxicology, is also a Fulbright & Carnegie African Diaspora Fellow. “Dr. Mutimawurugo will provide her expertise on tropical agroecology and sustainability, and horticultural crops production, states Senwo. “With her presence on our campus, we are strengthening existing partnerships between AAMU and the University of Rwanda to create programs that will provide our students with international agricultural internships, and cross-cultural and rural development experiences.”

Mutimawurugo is among 1,000 outstanding international faculty and professionals teaching and pursuing research in the U.S. through the Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program. Scholars study, teach, conduct research, exchange ideas, and contribute to finding solutions to complex global challenges. The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international academic exchange program and operates in over 160 countries worldwide.
