Certified Students Will Assist Individuals and Families at No Cost Beginning Feb. 7

Alabama A&M to Offer Free Tax Preparation Through VITA Program
For the second year in a row, Alabama A&M University will once again provide free income tax preparation services to the community through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, beginning Saturday, Feb. 7.
The free Tax Preparation Clinic, hosted by the College of Business and Public Affairs, will operate Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. through April 25 at the AAMU Welcome Center, located at the corner of Chase Road and Meridian Street in Normal. Services will be available by walk-in or appointment.
A total of 25 Alabama A&M accounting and finance students, certified in tax preparation, will assist with both resident and non-resident tax returns for current and previous tax years. Faculty members and certified professionals will supervise all services to ensure accuracy and compliance.
Alabama A&M, the only historically Black college or university (HBCU) to receive the IRS VITA grant, underscores the University’s commitment to community engagement and financial empowerment. The clinic provides free income tax preparation for qualifying individuals and families across the region.
In addition to preparing tax returns, student volunteers will assist individuals who need to file tax extensions. All services are confidential and provided at no cost.
Individuals seeking assistance should bring a valid photo ID; Social Security cards or ITINs for themselves, their spouse and any dependents; proof of income such as W-2s or 1099s; and any additional tax-related documents.
For more information or to schedule an appointment, email vita@aamu.edu or call 256-836-5246.
“This is more than just a tax service — it’s about empowering our community with financial knowledge and support,” said Dr. Felicia Farrar, CPA, CFE. “It’s also a great opportunity for our students to gain real-world experience while giving back.”
