Scoon Lands Northrop Grumman Data Analyst Role, Turning Internships into Career Launch

Josiah Scoon, a computer science major from Selma, Alabama, will graduate at Alabama A&M University’s Spring Commencement on May 8 and translate his academic achievements into a professional career as a data analyst with Northrop Grumman, marking a distinguished transition from scholarship to industry.

His path to graduation reflects both individual excellence and the collective achievement of Alabama A&M University’s graduates. He will report Aug. 10 to Northrop Grumman in Palmdale, California, to begin his career.

“I’m most looking forward to applying my knowledge in a real-world setting, continuing to grow professionally, and contributing to impactful projects in data analysis and technology,” said Scoon.

Drawn to technology at an early age, Scoon said curiosity sparked his academic path. “Growing up, I was especially fascinated with video games and how they worked behind the scenes,” he said. “That curiosity turned into a passion for understanding systems, problem-solving, and ultimately pursuing a career in technology.”

He chose Alabama A&M, he said, because it offered both excellence and opportunity. “It is the
No. 1 HBCU in Alabama and it checked off all of my boxes,” said Scoon. “From academics to culture and opportunity, I knew it was the right place for me to grow and succeed.”

At AAMU, Scoon maximized opportunities in and out of the classroom. He served in leadership roles with Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. and the Student Government Association, while also engaging in organizations that strengthened his leadership and service. His academic and professional development included internships with Northrop Grumman, BCD Travel and the National Defense Education Program, along with participation in programs through the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and other national partners.

“The best part of being a student at AAMU is that there are so many opportunities and paths available here for you—not only to accomplish your goals but to surpass them and turn your dreams into reality,” he said. “I will miss the relationships I’ve built along the way.”

As he looks toward the future, Scoon has set his sights on leadership in the technology sector. “My ultimate goal is to become a leader in data systems and cybersecurity, contributing to innovative solutions that improve efficiency and protect critical infrastructure,” he said.

Among the most important lessons he gained at Alabama A&M, Scoon points to resilience and faith.

“One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned at AAMU is that ‘no’ stands for new opportunities,” he said. “Anytime you don’t get what you want, it’s an opening for you to be exactly where you’re supposed to be in God’s timing.”

Grateful for the mentors, faculty and family members who supported him along the way, Scoon said their guidance helped shape his success.

“I want to thank the many faculty members who supported me throughout my journey at AAMU, as well as my family — but most importantly my mom, who sacrificed so much for me to be where I am today. I love her so much,” Scoon said.

For students considering Alabama A&M, Scoon offers a simple but powerful message.

“Don’t wait for the perfect moment to do something you have your mind set on, because there is no such thing as a perfect moment—jump straight into it and perform.”
