Media Director Joins Alabama A&M’s 150th Anniversary Campaign

Broadcasting Vision and Legacy: Jenkins Invests in AAMU's Future
As Alabama A&M University celebrates its 150th Anniversary, Elvin Jenkins is helping shape its next chapter. The Director of Electronic Media Communications has made a personal investment in the University’s historic campaign to raise $150 million, including $15 million through individual gifts, by December 2025. Jenkins’ gift will help strengthen the University’s endowment, with a focus on student scholarships and campus improvements.
“There are amazing things happening on the Hill, and I want to be a part of it,” Jenkins said. “Giving is my way of thanking the University for the service it provides.”
Jenkins has led Alabama A&M’s Electronic Media Communications since 2016, overseeing both WJAB 90.9 FM and WJAB-TV. The University’s radio station, a 100,000-watt powerhouse in the Tennessee Valley, is known for its signature blend of jazz, blues, and gospel. Its sister outlet, WJAB-TV, serves as a vital hub for campus news and storytelling.
A seasoned broadcast professional, Jenkins began his career as a staff announcer at WPRL-FM at Alcorn State University after earning his bachelor’s degree from Jackson State University in 1986. He went on to hold positions at Iowa Public Radio and later earned his master’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa. His leadership journey took him to Elizabeth City State University, where he directed television services and served as interim general manager of broadcasting. Prior to joining AAMU, he spent 13 years as general manager of WSNC-FM, the public radio station at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina.
Jenkins said his decision to give stems from deep respect for Alabama A&M’s legacy and momentum, and from a desire to contribute to an institution he believes is making a powerful and lasting impact.
“It pays homage to the resilience of the leaders and supporters of this institution,” he said of the 150th Anniversary Campaign. “150 years is an amazing milestone, especially given the challenges educational institutions in general, and HBCUs in particular, have faced. To not only overcome those obstacles but to also take its place among the elite learning institutions in Alabama and the nation is an amazing feat that must be recognized and honored.”
As someone immersed in campus communications and outreach, Jenkins has a front-row view of the University’s progress. He believes the physical transformation of the campus is more than cosmetic – it’s strategic.
“First impressions are long-lasting,” said Jenkins. “A&M is one of the most beautiful college campuses in the nation. But beauty isn’t enough. This commitment to campus improvements, including new building constructions and renovations, keeps the University competitive.”
He also supports the institution’s dual focus on growth and retention.
“The fact that retention is being emphasized along with increasing enrollment shows the University’s commitment to student success.”
But perhaps most fulfilling, Jenkins said, is witnessing how the University’s mission takes root in the lives of its students and graduates.
“Seeing the ‘Start Here, Go Anywhere’ motto in action is the best part of my job,” said Jenkins. “Watching former students leave the Hill and start careers in various fields that impact our daily lives.”
As he looks ahead, Jenkins hopes others will join him in giving back to the institution that continues to shape lives and communities.
“Supporting Alabama A&M University during this campaign is not about equal giving. Instead, it’s about equal commitment to the cause. So, whatever the size of your gift, the important thing is that you give so that the University can continue serving the nation and the world for the next 150 years and beyond.”
