Alabama A&M Receives "A" in Teacher Prep for Early Reader Instruction
The National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) recently released its Teacher Prep
Review of scientifically based reading instruction for over 700 teacher preparation
programs across the country. Alabama A&M was one of only 25 percent of programs to
score an “A” on adequately addressing all five core components of the review: phonemic
awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
According to NCTQ, more than one-third of fourth graders – 1.3 million children in
America – cannot read at a basic level. The review measures how well colleges and
universities are preparing teachers to implement effective literacy instruction strategies.
