Marching Maroon and White Thrills at Pepsi National Battle of the Bands

The spirit, precision, and pride of Alabama A&M University took center stage as the Marching Maroon & White (MMW) delivered a powerhouse performance at the 2025 Pepsi National Battle of the Bands in Houston. Held at NRG Stadium, the annual showcase brought together eight of the nation’s most distinguished Historically Black College and University (HBCU) marching bands, celebrating a tradition that unites music, culture, and community.

Led by Director of Bands Carlton Wright, the Marching Maroon & White blended tradition with innovation in a performance that captured the essence of Alabama A&M’s “Showband of the South.” For some, the moment marked a milestone – several incoming freshmen marched in their very first major performance, joining seasoned upperclassmen in front of a roaring Houston crowd.

“This is not a competition – everyone is a winner at this event,” Wright emphasized. “The most rewarding part is seeing our students enjoy themselves, connect with other bands, and take pride in representing Alabama A&M on a national stage. We were thrilled to see our many alumni and friends in the Houston area and were more than excited to put on a great show for them.”

Beyond the spectacle, the Battle of the Bands carries a profound purpose. Each year, the event serves as a platform to honor HBCU heritage while raising scholarship funds to support students. Pepsi awards each participating band $50,000 in scholarships – continuing the tradition of using music as a vehicle for opportunity.

From the precision of the drumline to the artistry of the dynamic Dancin’ Divas and the flair of the Fabulous Flags, the Marching Maroon & White performance embodied the pride and legacy of Alabama A&M University. For students, it was more than just a show – it was a moment to honor the past, embrace the present, and inspire the future.

The night reaffirmed what generations of Alabama A&M University alumni and supporters already know: when the Marching Maroon & White take the field, they do more than perform – they shine.
