Performance a Tribute to Alabama A&M University’s 150th Anniversary

AAMU Choir Performs Annual Spring Concert
In a moving tribute to the University’s sesquicentennial, the Alabama A&M University Choir filled the sanctuary at Church Street Cumberland Presbyterian with the power and
beauty of its timeless sound. The concert, held Sunday at 5 p.m., was a commemorative
performance celebrating the 150th anniversary of Alabama A&M University.
With deep roots tracing back to the school’s founding by William Hooper Councill –
an educator and visionary born into slavery – the Choir continues a legacy of musical
excellence that began nearly a century and a half ago.
The performance was presented by the Department of Visual, Performing and Communication
Arts in partnership with the Office of Student Affairs. Under the direction of Dr.
Horace Carney, associate professor of music and long-serving choir director, the ensemble
offered a stirring repertoire that included “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing” and other
classic works.
Carney is a member of the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame and serves as Minister of Music
at Birmingham’s historic Bethel Baptist Church. He also owns Omni-Music, his entertainment
company, and performs regularly with both a jazz trio and a five-piece dance band.
Justin Edwards accompanied the Choir on piano, with graduate assistant Ronnie Allen assisting as conductor.
This semester, the Choir has brought its message and music to high schools across Alabama, and recently expanded its reach to schools in Cleveland and Detroit. The AAMU Choir will conclude the academic year with a series of special performances at the Founder’s Day Wreath Laying Ceremony on Friday, May 2; and Spring 2025 Commencement Ceremonies on Friday, May 9.
