First-Generation Business Major Seizes Opportunities at AAMU

Robertson Among Scholars to Be Recognized at AAMU Black-Tie Scholarship Gala
Schylar Robertson, an Honors sophomore business administration major from Nashville, Tennessee, will be among seven students recognized at Alabama A&M University’s 25th Annual Black-Tie Scholarship Gala on April 17 at the AAMU Event Center.
“As a first-generation college student, pursuing higher education means breaking barriers and creating new opportunities for my family,” Robertson said. “Because of so many generous donors, I’ve been able to continue my journey without the weight of financial uncertainty.”
For Robertson, the pursuit of higher education represents more than earning a degree. It reflects a commitment to building a new path for her family while taking full advantage of the opportunities made possible through donor support.
She has received several scholarships, including the Delta Delta Initiates Endowed Scholarship, the DeWayne Carter Endowed Scholarship, the Start Here, Go Anywhere Endowed Scholarship and the 1875 Normalite Scholarship, each playing a vital role in her academic journey.
The Black-Tie Scholarship Gala, the University’s signature fundraising event, brings together alumni, corporate partners and community leaders to support student success. Proceeds provide critical scholarship funding across the University. This year’s program will feature scholarship recipients, student testimonies and performances by Grammy-nominated artist Tamia and hip-hop icon DJ Jazzy Jeff.
Robertson said the scholarships have significantly reduced her family’s financial burden, allowing her to focus on her education and leadership development.
“Instead of worrying about how I would continue my education, I’ve been able to pursue internships, gain real-world corporate experience and stay actively involved on campus,” she said.
During the 2024–25 academic year, 859 Alabama A&M University students received scholarships totaling more than $1.5 million, made possible through the generosity of donors and alumni. Robertson is among those whose educational journey has been strengthened by that support.
“As I prepare to be recognized at the gala, I’m reminded that this support is bigger than me,” Robertson said. “It’s an investment in my future, and I’m committed to making the most of every opportunity it has made possible.”
